The next morning, Cen Simiao sat in front of the dining table to eat. Only she had gotten up. She raised her eyes to look upstairs. The cooking auntie had gone to get her a cup of warmed milk, when she came back, her eyes followed Cen Simiao’s gaze over to the upstairs before giving a cold hum.
This auntie has worked in the family since the original’s mother was still alive and had watched over the original as she grew up, so the affection that the auntie had towards the original was definitely different compared to others.
Cen Simiao pacified her with a few words, then, after she finished eating, she carried another cup of milk upstairs, heading directly to Gu Yu's room. The auntie who was still downstairs simply sighed, her heart just felt really indignant for the other, feeling: the Miss has such a kind heart, she would definitely suffer for it in the future.
Gu Yu opened the door and saw the person in front of him, his gaze froze as he asked coldly, "Need something?"
She held the cup of milk up for him to see.
Gu Yu took a few steps out of the room as he responded, "No need to bring it up, I’ll go eat outside."
Cen Simiao caught up in a hurry and grabbed his arm. Gu Yu frowned, then looked at her while still maintaining a gentle tone, "What's the matter?"
Feeling immensely aggrieved and with a bit of cautiousness, she asked, "Ge, are you angry with me?"
In these past two days, as long as Gu Yu didn’t need to speak to her, he wouldn’t open his mouth at all. But no matter how much scheming he had in his heart on how he wanted to play around with Cen Simiao, he still needed to extinguish the anger in his heart first.
He glanced at Cen Simiao. "You’re thinking too much, the company has been very busy recently."
She pursed her lips and turned her head. Then, she drank the milk down before fiercely slamming the glass down on the floor.
Gu Yu's eyes appeared startled, and he didn’t understand what she meant by this. When the auntie heard this commotion, she hurriedly ran over from the kitchen, only to see Cen Simiao tugging on Gu Yu's arm with her eyes red.
Choking with sobs.
The auntie panicked. “What on earth happened?!”
It seemed as if Cen Simiao hadn’t heard as she continued to ask in a crying tone, “Ge, you’ve been ignoring me lately, I can feel it! Why did you come to hate me so suddenly...?”
Gu Yu have experienced being led around by her until he couldn’t even retort, he also knew that Cen Simiao couldn’t be well-intentioned and struggled, but only ended up being held even tighter. Cen Simiao continued sounding rather sincere, “You’ve said that you liked me best, that no matter what happens, you would always accompany me! But now you don't want to care about me at all…”
"What was it I did that was unsatisfactory, can’t you tell me?"
Gu Yu’s brows furrowed as he responded in a deep voice, "Calm down a bit, be more careful of the words you’re using. Before I..."
Halfway through his words, he saw that Cen Simiao's expression had turned normal again as she glanced at Father Gu’s door. He then watched as she turned her head around, walking towards the vase in the corner...
And she directly pushed it off the table with pursed lips.
There was a crash, which sounded much louder than when the glass had shattered.
The auntie had been about to come forward but now paused her steps as she grasped her apron and wiped her hands. Suddenly hearing Father Gu’s bedroom door open, Cen Simiao's eyes reflected pain as she raised her eyes in panic.
Gu Yu pinched his palm and wanted to explain, but Cen Simiao pulled him behind her and blocked him. "This had nothing to do with Ge, it was all my fault."
Father Gu's face became even more outrageously dark.
Gu Yu pushed her away but was caught instead and could get free. In between the scuffle, something seemingly fell from him. Unconsciously, Cen Simiao bent down to pick it up, then her pupils constricted and her face paled. She quickly hid the paper behind herself.
Father Gu's anger was almost to the point where it could burn people, but seeing the look on Cen Simiao’s face, he felt that something was definitely wrong and went to snatch it over. After he grabbed it and saw the contents on the paper, his expression became extremely cold. "Truly, how great."
On that sheet was a customer’s profile.
And on the back, all the business price quotes that would only be known internally by the other company were listed. The most crucial thing was that there was also a line written on the back, which was in Gu Yu’s handwriting.
About to leave.
If this was in the past, Gu Yu could have easily explained it away by saying that he had managed to get the other side’s trade secrets while that line of writing was just randomly written.
But it wouldn’t work now...
The Gu family company having lost money time and time again, Father Gu had long suspected that someone inside the company was playing tricks, but he hasn’t been able to catch anyone this entire time. To him, aside from himself, anyone and everyone could be suspected.
Cen Simiao narrowed her eyes.
******
The price of a house near the commercial center was ridiculously expensive. But the sales lady, with an exquisitely made-up face and a friendly attitude, had explained all the perks of the house one by one.
The unit was already ready, and one could immediately move in.
Cen Simiao looked at the price written on the contract, then rather despotically, paid the amount in full after giving it just a short thought. Following, she directly took the key to open the door, threw her suitcase on the floor, and stood in front of the French windows to look outside.
A bustling scene.
She finally managed to move out. If she continued to stay in the Gu’s family home, who would know whether Gu Yu might go crazy one day and try to directly kill her? Especially now that he could neither enter the company nor hold any dignity at home.
Father Gu particularly cared about keeping face, so no matter what, he refused to let people know that Gu Yu had betrayed the company. All for fear of outsiders making a joke out of him, that he has become dim-sighted because of his old age and even brought home a white-eyed wolf[1].
Instead, Gu Yu would just get some money every month, mainly so that he wouldn’t humiliate himself and Father Gu whenever he goes out to eat and drink with the other young masters.
In the end, everything was for the concept ‘face’.
Going into the bathroom, she took out the things she would need for a wash, then she waited for the water to reach the set temperature which was incomparably comfortable as it landed on her skin. After the shower, Cen Simiao leaned back on the sofa as she wiped her still-dripping hair with a towel.
And her whole body felt much more relaxed.
Tapping on her phone to unlock it...
Going into WeChat’s messaging interface, the first conversation was An Zeru’s, who had just sent over a message.
【Can’t you at least give me a squeak?】
She tapped at her screen and replied: 【Squeak.】
A second later, a WeChat notification tone rang again, An Zeru had sent over a smiley emoticon.
Accompanied by a sentence: ‘You’re acting so f★ck★ng cute.’
[T/N: Given what we know of An Zeru, if this was face to face, there is 80% this would have been forced out through gritted teeth because Cen Simiao has been ignoring/hanging him.]
Cen Simiao paused. She really couldn't figure out whether An Zeru meant this as ridicule or that he really felt this way from the bottom of his heart...
Then immediately, another message arrived.
【Why do you care? I’ve been very busy recently, I don’t have time to speak to you.】
Cen Simiao’s brows quirked up, and she was just about to reply when the system stopped her. “Stop! Didn’t we decide to find fault and make trouble, what are you trying to do now?!”
She lowered her gaze and thought for a moment before replying: 【What a coincidence, me too.】
An Zeru hasn’t been to work for a long time, but it wasn’t until Cen Simiao personally called the An family before she found out that the An family had supported the decision. She was a bit puzzled, thinking that such a situation was unexpected, but it also wasn’t her place to say anything.
But speaking of it, it really has been a long while since they last met...
Wonder what he’s been doing lately...
An Zeru tightly held his phone as he stared at the words indicating that the other side was typing a response. His whole body was tense, and his teeth were clenched, the two together made it appear as if he wanted to start a fight with someone.
Zhu Fengfeng, who was seated on a booth off to the side, opened a bottle of alcohol and began to drink. But seeing the other’s expression, he stood up and handed him a bottle as well. He craned his head, wanting to take a closer glance, but An Zeru was too alert and immediately avoided the other’s gaze.
Zhu Fengfeng lightly gave his nose piercing a rub as he asked, "What have you done against your conscience for you to be this afraid of another person’s sight?"
An Zeru took the bottle and chugged a mouthful, his throat rolled as he swallowed it down. "You’re quite experienced?"
Zhu Fengfeng shook his head. "Thinking of those years when I courted the school flower on one side as I ran around to please the class flower, my face was precisely like yours right now, that same expression, tangled yet sweet, plus a bit of fluster[2]."
An Zeru snorted. "B★llsh★t."
Zhu Fengfeng: "Then let me take a look."
An Zeru decided to just directly turn off the screen but still heard the other person show off next to his ear: "So I’ve hit the mark, right? Otherwise, you wouldn’t be so lacking in self-confidence."
An Zeru took another mouthful of the alcohol and bit the tip of his tongue as he thought of the messages he had sent, which really made him feel like he was like a certain medicinal plaster[3]... So TM humiliating…
Xiao Suhan, who was also sitting on the side, yawned and appeared to be falling asleep as she slowly joined in. "Don't talk nonsense, he’s still so innocent. Let alone chasing girls, he doesn’t even have anyone in his heart yet."
Then she glanced at An Zeru, her gaze profound.
She laughed and was just about to speak again when she heard the sound of a bottle break somewhere away from them. It was very noisy, particularly loud. Everyone who came here was part of the same circle. So although some people might get into arguments after drinking too much, a fight had never occurred before.
Although Zhu Fengfeng typically dressed rather rebelliously, even he had to spit out some curses when encountering a matter like this.
He rushed over ahead of the others and watched for a while before hurriedly running back. Putting on a mysterious guise, he asked the others, "F★ck! You guys want to guess who was fighting?"
Xiao Suhan was curious. “Who? Say it!”
"Gu Yu. Seems his fists aren’t weak at all."
An Zeru's devil-may-care-like gaze froze for a moment. Straightening up to look over, he could only see a ring of people around the commotion, with constant cursing sounding from the inside.
Narrowing his eyes, he thought: How impressive of her.[1] A white-eyed wolf is a term used to call someone who’s ungrateful towards whom they received kindness or favor, someone who would bite the hand that fed them.
[2] School/class flower is essentially the prettiest girl of the school/class respectively.
[3] There is a certain type of medicinal plaster that’s well known to be difficult to pull off. I think of it as similar to waxing but worse. The saying refers to people who are super clingy or sticky, though in the appropriate context may also refer to a quack product.
