In the Research Institute, the vice dean was still pacing back and forth.

"How's the situation?" As soon as he saw that someone had come in, the vice dean immediately questioned.

That person's expression was quite marvelous. "Vice Dean... Zhou Wanglin has been killed, someone stabbed him right through the heart with a knife."

"Geng Yan has a thunder-type ability. If Geng Yan was the one who killed him, he certainly wouldn’t have used a knife. If it wasn’t Geng Yan, then it must’ve been Ji Anran. Unexpectedly, that little white face still has a few tricks at hand. It’s also unknown what exactly Geng Yan did, that he managed to work together from both sides with Ji Anran to kill off Zhou Wanglin."

"That trash! Geng Yan and them had been busy killing zombies until now, yet he can’t even capture one person under this advantage. He’s even a level three ability user too, is he not afraid of being shamed once this gets out?!" The vice dean was furious.

"Then what are we going to do now?" A certain hacker was already completely stupefied.

The vice dean was so angered that he directly slapped the desk. "I also want to know what should be done next?! I had previously thought that the worst result would have been that we failed to kidnap the person, where we can then just go back and take more time to replan everything. But now, even Zhou Wanglin’s dead. Without him, it's harder for us to catch a level three ability holder alive than even to ascend to the heavens[2]!"

"Has Zhou Wanglin's body been taken care of?" The hacker stood up in fright. "If it gets discovered by the base and they follow the clues from Zhou Wanglin..."

"I didn’t have any other choice, I could only bring his body back to the laboratory first. As for what to do next, may the Vice Dean please instruct."

Compared to the tension and problems arising over at the research institute, on the other side with Ji Anran, they had already entered the ending of their engagement.

In this operation, the vice dean has lost a lot of his manpower. With all the pools of blood on the ground, the entire scene appeared quite frightening.

Geng Yan's teammates have incurred some small injuries here and there, but nothing of true significance.

"These people... This will be troublesome, I don't have much of an impression of these people. It should be that they often mix within the black market, and so would seldom appear elsewhere."

One of those that followed over with the law enforcement team was a staff member of the base’s mission hall. This person would have dealings with all the ability users coming to accept missions almost every day and so was very familiar with a majority of the ability users of the base.

There weren’t many ability holders who wouldn't go to the mission hall. These sorts of people consisted only of those powerful teams, like Geng Yan's, and those of the black market who lived in the shadows.

After all, the mission hall could guarantee that the promised reward wouldn’t be randomly deducted or completely swallowed up by some other party; moreover, they have divided the difficulty of the tasks into various levels, which made it convenient for everyone during their selections. So if one wasn’t extremely confident in their own strength, or the team itself didn’t have relatively strong information channels and analysis ability, they would go to the mission hall to choose what job to do according to the difficulty.

Ji Anran frowned. "People from the black market... The base wouldn’t have that much information about these types of people, right? This would be troublesome then. I had thought we would’ve been able to figure out whose people they were."

"The person who tried to kidnap Anran just now was very strong. Although he had tried to disguise his voice to hide his identity... I’m quite certain that he was a level three ability user!"

As soon as Geng Yan's voice fell, everyone on the scene descended into silence.

There were only those few level three ability holders; and for each level three, the base would have records of their relevant information. After all, these people were indispensable elements of the guerrilla teams during the zombie tide.

Out of the entire base, it was only just Ji Anran, this one level three ability holder, who has yet to be found out. After all, it wasn’t easy to survive during an apocalypse while having to maintain one’s identity as an ability holder hidden. Not everyone had a willing-to-devote of a foolish ex-boyfriend.

"Well then, we’ll go back and investigate. A level three ability user, an earth-type ability... Maybe it's Zhou Wanglin?" The leader of the law enforcement team had a tangled expression.

He has never met Zhou Wanglin, but he has heard a bit of Zhou Wanglin’s deeds.

Zhou Wanglin had quite a good reputation outside. He would help other ability users who have fallen into danger, even if they weren’t from the same base as him. With such a frightening kidnapping incident connecting to Zhou Wanglin...

It left people with a hard to believe, incredible feeling.

"The most unlikely person, often is precisely the offender." The leader of the law enforcement team sighed. "Let's go. It's time for us to go investigate."

Ji Anran was walking at the front. "The ability user Geng-ge killed is over here. I suspect that the mastermind will come and deal with the corpse."

"Vice Dean! The law enforcement team is rushing over here right now, what should we do?"

The vice dean breathed a low sigh. "Alas, who knows whether it was the right move not bringing back Zhou Wanglin's body. Let’s go out and take a look. We’ll all give the same story, just say that we only dared to come out to see the excitement after the sounds of fighting had stopped. Then, as a result, we weren’t able to see anything at all."

"Understood."

The body that had been on the lift had already been removed and the blood too had been wiped away.

The leader of the law enforcement team squatted down and took a sniff. "A smell of blood. There was blood here, but it has been wiped away."

The vice dean came over leading a group of people while wearing an expression of great surprise.

"You guys are finally here. We’ve been scared to death. We had heard sounds of fighting just now, but we didn't dare to come out to check..."

"Vice Dean, long time no see. Are you familiar with Zhou Wanglin?" Ji Anran was swaying his fox tail.

The vice president was a sly old man after all, so his expression was extremely normal.

"I've met him a few times, but it can only be considered a nodding acquaintance. What's the matter?"

Ji Anran continued to stare at the vice dean’s expression without even a blink. "In fact, it’s nothing much. It’s just that we suspect he’s the culprit behind this kidnapping case, that’s all."

"Ah? That can't be true, right? Zhou Wanglin is a good person, everyone in the base knows this. Don't you go making false accusations. Although they’re both level three ability users, he won’t necessarily be a threat to Geng Yan. There’s no need to overthink."

They had already made their plan. If Geng Yan was able to figure out that his opponent was a level three earth-ability user, they would just stubbornly deny it. In any case, they can say that Geng Yan was jealous of the other's strength and was worried that the other would become a level four powerhouse, surpassing him.

It's just that the pity was... God proposes, man disposes[3]. Zhou Wanglin is dead. They’ll be able to figure out that the kidnapper Geng Yan killed is Zhou Wanglin as soon as an investigation is done.

"I’m not overthinking things. When I was caught at that time, it’s not as if I had directly lost consciousness or anything. My basic judgment ability was still there." Ji Anran’s lips curled up. "Why have I heard that Zhou Wanglin and one of your favored students would often get together to drink and chat?"

"It’s quite normal for young people to get together and interact, I’m not very sure." The vice dean explained without a change in expression.

The leader of the law enforcement team had been observing the two parties this entire time. "Vice Dean, can I go take a look at the research institute’s surveillance videos?"

"It’s of no use, the surveillance has been sabotaged." Ji Anran curled his lips. "As Geng-ge chased the man, that man destroyed the monitoring cameras as he ran, I don’t think it would’ve been able to capture much."

The law enforcement team captain narrowed his eyes. "This person is too familiar with the monitoring in this area, even more reason to give it a good investigation. I suspect there’s a mole inside the Institute, you won’t mind if I check it out, right?"

"No problem." The vice dean was still calm as always.

The captain of the law enforcement team called over a couple of subordinates, and after giving out a few orders, he followed the vice dean into the research institute.

[2] Not dead. But the “ascend” as in from cultivation worlds, more like ascend to become immortal or god.

[3] Raw: 天算不如人算 [tiān suàn bù rú rén suàn] The author flipped the standard 人算不如天算 which is the typical idiom “man proposes, God disposes.” Though in all honesty, the sentiment isn’t all that different and can be understood as “one’s plans can be derailed by unforeseen events,” the key is the difference between the cause of the unforeseen.
