Dejected, Ji Anran leaned back on the sofa and closed his eyes.
Was… it so obvious?
"Anran. It’s nothing pleasurable for a person to fight alone, trying to survive in this post-apocalyptic world. With even the simple act of sleeping at night, one would still need to worry whether there will be someone stronger coming to assassinate them, killing them for their supplies."
Ji Anran still didn’t speak.
Wei Yanhua continued, "As a person, I prefer to stay at home and aren’t very fond of socializing or fighting. But in order to survive during the apocalypse, one must continue to constantly find ways to improve one’s strength. As I am alone, sometimes I too would worry about all kinds of things. The two of us are close friends, I trust you, we can fight side by side and work together."

In his previous life, when Geng-ge first started his business, he hadn’t been able to bear that loneliness. He knew that Geng-ge was trying to create a better future for his sake, but he still couldn't help it.
After all, who could know how long the business would take before Geng-ge would be able to have more free time on his hands? A few months? A year? Or several years?

Later, they met again during the apocalypse. Geng-ge refused his request to get back together, and as he had always been a proud and arrogant person, he couldn’t stand the fact that he had been rejected in front of everyone, so he turned around and left.
After that, he weathered through all the challenges of the apocalypse alone. When it was night, he didn’t even dare to sleep too soundly, and it was at those times that he missed Geng-ge the most.
"I admit that my love wasn’t as deep as his and that my love was also full of too many calculations over gains and losses." Ji Anran covered his face while his voice also became a bit choked up with emotions. “But after all is said and done, I still liked him. I regretted and couldn't let it go, not just because of the benefits.”
"He has been refusing to get back together this entire time. Anran, you have to understand this point." Wei Yanhua drew blood on the first prick[1].
The rims of Ji Anran's eyes were red, and his voice was hoarse beyond words.
"I knew, I had always known!" Ji Anran's hands suddenly clenched into fists and in his eyes was a bit of a craze.
Quite a while later, he finally loosened his fists and pulled the corner of his mouth into something that resembled a smile as if having resigned himself to his fate.
"Actually, when I think about it more carefully, I've been rather selfish this entire time. When I kept pestering him up until now, wasn’t it precisely because I had concluded that he must still be in love with me and so I was emboldened by that fact? Having rejected me so many times, perhaps he had long wanted to free himself. I really have no reason to continue entangling with Geng-ge, I don't deserve to!"
Geng-ge loved him so much, he probably had long seen himself through, right? Which is why, no matter whether it was in his previous life or this one, Geng-ge's first reaction was to reject him. His ‘like’ had always been tainted by hidden intentions, it had never been pure.
Ji Anran took a can of beer that was on the table and directly chugged it down.
The rims of his eyes were red, while there was a flickering of the water within as if at some unknown time soon, he would no longer be able to hold back and cry.
Seeing this situation, Wei Yanhua went to the refrigerator to get even more alcohol out, putting them on the table.
"Anran, you're in a bad mood, I'll drink with you. While one’s still alive, if you can’t find the love that you’re seeking, you can still turn around and find the friends who are by your side. There would always be a small bit of warmth in this world that remains ever-present."
Wei Yanhua opened a bottle of wine and accompanied Ji Anran to drink.
Wei Yanhua's drinking capacity was very good. After a few bottles of wine, Ji Anran was already much too drunk.
Whereas, although Wei Yanhua's cheeks were a little red, his big, gleaming eyes were still very clear.
Humans are all selfish, and he was no exception.
During the apocalypse, the trust between people has almost completely crumbled. You simply wouldn’t know whether your teammate would suddenly stab you in the back someday, whether the originally loving and affectionate couple would suddenly turn against each other.
Before the apocalypse, Wei Yanhua would always just stay home, he absolutely loathed socializing.
But after the apocalypse occurred, Wei Yanhua found that living these days while staying alone wasn’t as easy as he had imagined. When sleeping alone at night, where you couldn’t dare to sleep at all soundly, that feeling simply couldn’t get any worse, any more terrible.
He had quite a few people pursuing him, but it was just too difficult to find someone he could trust and willing to entrust. So after meeting this friend with who he could exchange mutual sincerity, he couldn't help but be moved, be tempted.
Therefore...
Wei Yanhua’s lips curled into a smile and his eyes glimmered.
"Geng Yan, I truly had no intention of undermining you[2]. But you've already rejected him so many times, for me to find myself a little companion to struggle with, living our single lives together, it’s not asking for too much, right?"
[1] Raw: 一针见血 [yī zhēn jiàn xiě] Essentially the Chinese version of “hitting the nail on the head.” I felt like the original metaphor is direct enough.
[2] Raw: 挖墙角 [wā qiáng jiǎo] If used in business-related situations, it typically means to undermine someone else's business. However, when used with people/regarding relationships, it implies that someone is seducing someone else away. In our case, Wei Yanhua is “seducing” Ji Anran away from Geng Yan… But Wei Yanhua and Ji Anran aren’t in that kind of relationship, I chose to use the word ‘undermine’.
