At the same moment, in the research institute of Chenxi Base, several researchers were still working hard at their job.
Because of the problem with the rain, as people continue to eat those plants that have been irrigated by the rainwater, toxin would continue to accumulate in their bodies. Therefore, researchers at the Institute have long been studying, trying to produce some pharmaceuticals that would be able to clean up these impurities.
After all, although the base had managed to save some portion of uncontaminated soil in time and have also put an effort in developing soilless agriculture, how would the majority of the common people of the base be able to afford to eat these expensive uncontaminated vegetables?
This chemical compound was something that they had to successfully develop no matter what.
A long while later, these few people finally lowered the results in their hands to jump in excitement.
"After working at it for so long, it’s finally developed!" The voice of one of the researchers was choked with emotions. "Xiao Hui, fortunately you had picked the right plant."
Chen Xiaohui couldn't hide the smile on his face. "At that time, I only thought that the properties of sweet magnolia should be quite suitable, I just didn't expect for it to be a success as soon as we experimented. But this is also all thanks to the fact that everyone has conducted so much testing on the raw materials beforehand, eliminating so many of the other possibilities. Otherwise, it would have been difficult for me to just happen to pick the right one."
"No matter what, you still have quite the contribution in this. You are also diligent in your work…" One of the researchers started praising Chen Xiaohui to high heaven.
Chen Xiaohui just continued with a smile on his face, while he grew more and more excited in his heart.
He knew that this time he had finally integrated himself into this team. The reason he had just happened to select correct experimental material this time was, of course, not because of any chance or coincidence, but because he had heard about it in his previous life.
Feng Yu took off his face mask. "Everyone has worked hard today, go back and rest. I'll write the report to send to the leaders tomorrow, everyone can just wait to be sent supplies."
After exchanging information, Geng Yan returned home.
The moon hung high in the sky, covering the ground with a layer of silvery-white radiance.
The streets were quiet, not many people would dare to be out. The only prosperous or lively places were the taverns and the red light district.
"Anran?"
Geng Yan made a round through the house but still couldn’t find a hint of Ji Anran.
And so, Geng Yan went to take the elevator to Wei Yanhua’s floor. Although generally one could only stop at a particular floor with the house owner's door card, as long as the house owner goes to the community’s property management to register the information of the person who they wish to allow to visit, then other people could also stop at the house owner’s floor by scanning their face.
"Ding-dong..."
Geng Yan rang the doorbell.
Wei Yanhua walked over and opened the door, his lips were lifted up in a smile with unknown implications.
Geng Yan was stunned as soon as he entered the door.
Anran was intoxicated from all the drink, now lying on the sofa without putting any guard on at all.
"What are you trying to do getting Anran drunk?!"
Geng Yan's expression was pitch-black as he stared at Wei Yanhua with a scrutinizing gaze.
Obviously, Geng Yanhua had already taken Wei Yanhua as a hypocrite harboring unfathomable intentions.
Wei Yanhua didn't even bother to close the door as he simply leaned against the wall.
"Anran wasn’t happy, so I just accompanied him to drink. In fact, you should be asking yourself what you’ve done, otherwise, why would he come find me to drink with him?"
"Do you dare say you haven't been instigating at all?"
Geng Yan's eyes narrowed dangerously as the ill-will towards this love rival of his grew increasingly denser in his eyes.
Wei Yanhua raised his hand to fan himself. "It shouldn’t be considered instigation? He was in a bad mood from having been rejected too many times, so I only advised him to give up. Is that also considered instigation? Didn’t you always want him to stop trying to get back with you, I was only helping you~"
Geng Yan sneered. "I'll take Anran back first. As for you, I'll settle the score with you tomorrow."
Ji Anran was helped up. When he opened his eyes in a daze, he found that the person in front of him was the Geng-ge who he had been constantly thinking about, unable to let go.
"Geng-ge..."
Ji Anran shook his head, hoping to clear up his mind a bit.
Geng Yan's voice was so gentle that it seemed to be able to drip. "Anran, let's go home."
"No, Geng-ge. In the future, I won't go look for you to get back together again. There’s no reason for me to continue being a laggard, staying in your house. I'll just sleep here at Yanhua's tonight, you go back."
Last life...
After the breakup, Geng Yan missed Ji Anran like crazy, but it also made obvious a problem that he had not been willing to actually face.
He and Anran were in love with each other, but Anran’s love wasn’t as deep as his.
Having been unable to accompany the other much over several months, he could understand why Anran chose to leave. He went to start his own business so that he could give Anran a better life, yet because of the business, caused Anran’s heart to suffer through such sadness.
He had overlooked the impact such a waiting period could do on Anran, it was his fault.
But still…
Anran just left, he left so cleanly and decisively. So he had no choice but to admit that Anran did not love him as much as he did the other, thereby unwilling to even give himself the chance to persuade him to stay.
After the apocalypse occurred, he and Anran met again, and Anran wanted to get back together.
He refused.
Why would Anran want to get back together with him? Perhaps, within this post-apocalyptic world, the only person who could allow Anran to feel assured would be him. Which was why he was able to say those words hoping to get back together without any hesitation at the moment of their reunion, without any regard to what his feelings were like at the time.
It wasn’t only because of feelings, but also because of interests, he understood that. He couldn't accept it and so refused.
YinYue has something to say:
Apparently, I forgot some footnotes here and I'm also a bit lazy to find it again in the raws. The two were just details on the "toxins" and the "sweet magnolia" mentioned, both of which I hadn't been able to figure out the implications of the author. The former was translated to something similar to "sediments" or "sinking stones," but since they refer to impurities in the rainwater that would affect humans, I went ahead and used "toxins." The sweet magnolia was essentially the literal translation of the plant material mentioned: it was three characters, the first character could be used as "dry" or "sweet" while the latter two was very straightforward "magnolia." I figured if they were developing compounds, they probably wouldn't be using dried specimens... And also, "dried magnolia" is kind of broad (in my mind), so... It ended up at "sweet magnolia."
