Cen Simiao was sitting in the corner with her head lowered and a wine glass tightly in her grasp.
Everyone at the banquet was dressed expensively; every gesture carried an inherent grace while each word uttered had countless undertones. Gu Yu was happy enough to just converse without mentioning any business matters, and just by relying on his humor, he had gained himself quite a bit of goodwill.
Standing beside him was a female companion, who would echo him from time to time, her eyes curved from her smile. She had a very personable and sensible appearance.
Which helped Gu Yu earn quite a bit of face.
While things were progressing so smoothly, he suddenly felt that something was misplaced. Without displaying anything on his face, he raised his eyes to scan the hall. Upon seeing Cen Simiao, he pursed his lips.
Gu Yu parted from the group with a smile and walked up to Cen Simiao. Seeing that she was in a low mood and didn't seem to have noticed that he had come over, he leaned slightly towards her and turned his head.
So he could look into her eyes.
And he was stunned, those eyes were full of unwillingness and even had a trace of despair.
For some reason, his throat felt tight and all the words that he was about to say to coax her were stuck, and he couldn’t even utter half a word.
Cen Simiao only curved the corners of her lips. "Ge."
Finally, Gu Yu regained his senses. He then closed his eyes and hummed in response. Just as he was about to speak, the sound of a pair of heels walking across the floor sounded next to him. Wu Yunrui's voice had always been meticulously sweet, such that even when her tone was very solemn, it would still tickle people’s ears.
"Eldest Young Master Zhang was just asking about you. He’s waiting for you over there."
His expression stiffened for a second. He wanted to go over immediately but was also afraid that Cen Simiao would form a grudge against him. Wu Yunrui continued in a soft voice, "You go hurry over, I’ll accompany Miss Gu to talk. The two of us girls also have some things to talk about."
Gu Yu glanced at Cen Simiao.
The latter just took a sip of red wine without raising her eyes.
By the time the wine has crossed her throat, the man has already left, leaving only Wu Yunrui chattering next to Cen Simiao. She was quite the expert at making a conversation. "Your dress is so beautiful. I had seen it when I was in the mall before, but I couldn’t bear the price to buy it."
Cen Simiao was wearing a long black fishtail dress that was cinched at the waist, which made her appear slim and delicate. This contrast made her complexion seem brighter and fairer, while her makeup tonight leaned towards the gentler side.
Which added a touch of simple elegance.
She had nothing to say to Wu Yunrui and just offhandedly replied, "Have my brother buy it for you."
Wu Yunrui was happily chattering away when she was suddenly choked by such a sentence. Recovering after a moment, her smile became natural again. "Gu Yu and I are just friends. This time, it was only because he needed a female companion but also couldn’t bear to tire you out, thus dragging me here."
She was not stupid; knowing what the current situation was like, she had never thought of confronting Cen Simiao. A large part of why Gu Yu liked her was related to how she wouldn’t be petty.
Cen Simiao felt particularly bored and lowered her eyes. Then suddenly, she smiled and lowered her voice, "My brother seldom has such close relationships with the opposite gender. It seems I will need to find some way to pull some strings for him...”
"Otherwise, who knows when I will be able to call someone ‘sister-in-law’."
Wu Yunrui's expression was flustered, while the smile on her lips became awkward. However, where she wasn’t conscious of it, there was a trace of complacence in her eyes. Just as she was about to refute, she heard Cen Simiao say, "Yunrui-jie, I think you’re a very nice person."
Wu Yunrui was stunned, and a little confused about what the other person meant.
Cen Simiao's eyes curved again. "Now that I have already spoken up to here... We should be considered very close to each other, right?"
Wu Yunrui hurriedly nodded.
Cen Simiao's eyes narrowed. "Then I also won’t hide it from you. Recently, I've been rather short of money, while my family is also strict. Can you lend me some?"
Wu Yunrui was startled, then remarked with a smile, "You don’t seem to be a person short on money. Speak, how much do you want?”
Cen Simiao tilted her head, the price of two new bags.
Wu Yunrui’s smile slightly stiffened.
Because she was poor. Although she was usually lavish as well, she has never been extravagant like Cen Simiao. Her sole source of income was Gu Yu; and whether he gave more or gave less, she could only accept it.
Either way, within her group of sisters, it was enough for her to show off.
She also didn’t dare to ask for more, fearing she would seem like one of those women who Gu Yu hated, those who only cared about money.
After Cen Simiao received the transfer, her face was all smiles, exceptionally happy. She then said to Wu Yunrui, "I'll pay you back when I have the money. If you can't wait until then, just ask my brother for it."
Wu Yunrui gripped her phone tightly, such that even her fingernails had turned white because of the strength she was using.
The money has floated away...
A while into the banquet, someone went to put on the music, and many people gathered together to dance. Wu Yunrui conscientiously got up to walk towards the center of the hall, but after a few steps, she suddenly stopped.
She looked back towards Cen Simiao.
Her smile was full of modesty. "Why don’t you go and dance with him? I have heard for a long time that you can dance very well."
Cen Simiao raised her eyes. "I dislike how he doesn’t dance well."
Wu Yunrui smiled exquisitely, didn’t respond any further, and just turned around to find Gu Yu. She gently leaned towards him and he took the opportunity to hold her waist. With the two’s tacit understanding, they cooperated very well.
Whereas, Gu Yu only felt that he was beginning to feel the effects of the wine and there was s sense of excitement that was seeping out from his bones. He danced to his heart’s content, his movements natural and unrestrained. In the past, given that he was already good-looking, then adding on how he was usually reserved, he made other people feel warm and comforting.
However, at this moment, he gave people a different kind of feeling.
After finishing the song, he suddenly sobered up and looked back towards the corner. There hasn’t been anyone there in a while.
Gu Yu's heart sank.
