Geng Yan nodded. "It's too quiet here. And I don't think it’s because they’ve now seen that we have two third-order ability holders and thus became afraid to come out. My guess is, there really isn’t anyone still alive left."
"This location is somewhere that we are bound to pass on the way back to the base. As long as someone has even a bit of understanding of the terrain and uses their brains a little, they would probably choose to come here to lay the ambush. And this dark and gloomy tunnel is exactly the perfect temporary hiding spot."
Contrarily, it was too open outside of the tunnel. The bushes on the mountain are too short, the trees are sparse and there aren’t any large stones or rocks. Sweeping a glance across everything, the only place that could hide anyone was just the tunnel.
Although staying in the tunnel would put them at risk in case of the tunnel collapsing, burying them inside, wouldn't it be okay if they only had to wait until the prey arrived, then come out right after, without fighting inside?
Gao Xun was at a complete loss and scratched his head.
"What exactly are you two trying to say? That there should be a lot of people coming to the tunnel to lay an ambush, but yet they’re not in the tunnel?"
"There are very few third-order ability holders now. With an entire level barrier between second and third-order, third-orders can easily fight one-to-ten. I think all the other teams who had hidden in the tunnel have all consumed each other."
Ji Anran's obsidian-like large eyes sparkled with excitement. "Given the tightness of time, I don't think this team has transported their supplies back yet, the supplies should be just nearby!"
"Let’s go take a look in the tunnel, maybe they’re just buried inside. The smell of blood isn’t very strong, clearly indicating that someone had intentionally washed away the bloodstains, while the bodies got buried and hidden."
Geng Yan took the lead and walked at the front.
The team headed towards the tunnel. Ji Anran concentrated on using his ability to detect the air around him.
There was a faint smell of blood inside the tunnel, but he couldn’t feel any breaths of the living. It seemed that there really weren’t any left alive.
Geng Yan used a flashlight to illuminate the road ahead, and everything on the road became clear.
What used to be a cement tunnel road was now fragmented with chunks of broken rocks and soil mixed together.
These chunks of broken cement came in large and small, where some big ones were the size of a school desk, inserted at a slant in the soil... If someone were to hope to directly speed to break through the tunnel, it would be considered fortunate if the car doesn't flip.
"This road’s been destroyed. I suspect it was done by that earth ability user on their team. On the one hand, it was to bury the corpses to prevent the smell of blood from being too strong and thus attracting over the zombies; while on the other hand, it was to intercept those who would be driving through the tunnel."
Ji Anran thought about it a bit and understood.
The tunnel was very long, but only the few meters ahead were in such a vexing state.
Ji Anran stared at the soil and broken rocks under his feet, and his pretty delicate face twisted with a frown. "I conjecture they buried both the supplies and bodies underneath here. Are we going to dig with shovels?"
"Haha." Geng Yan couldn't help but laugh out.
Prior to the apocalypse, Anran's life was that of a pampered young master, living like a prince, without having to suffer much. Then after the apocalypse started and he met up with Anran again, he had never allowed Anran to be wronged in his day-to-day life. So it was no surprise that Anran was blowing his top; on the contrary, had he not, that wouldn’t quite make sense.
Hearing this laughter, Ji Anran gave Geng Yan a fierce glare. "You sure are laughing happily."
He was so angry that he went and kicked a small stone as he continued to curse and scorn the other in his heart.
Just like this yet you still want to pursue me and get back together? Why don't you try and ascend to the heavens?!
Geng Yan didn't know that his distance away from his goal of chasing down his husband was again lengthened but was speaking to Zhou Liang instead, "You’re a plant-type ability. If you send some plants down for a search, the efficiency should be higher than for us to all dig."
Zhou Liang began to search for the supplies and dug up many crystal nuclei. The amount was more than what they had managed to scrape together from that team led by the third-order ability user.
Ji Anran stared at the bright and shining crystal nuclei, his heart filled with emotion.
"Ah, just how many fellow (robbers) did this team kill before, but this sentiment of them doing their best to kill the bad guys to send us supplies... It really is touching."
Geng Yan couldn't help but laugh.
Anran is still so naughty.
After taking away the materials, Geng Yan and others walked out of the tunnel and boarded the minibus to continue on their way.
The rest of the way back was completely safe since those who had received the news and thus planned to intercept them had all died at that critical tunnel.
Since the apocalypse started, communication had become very inconvenient, such that only higher-ups of the base would be able to get the news of what happened at the trade fair at the first time.
So except for the higher-ups of the base, no one else had found out about this fact that supplies would burst out after the death of a spatial-ability holder.
After smoothly entering the base, Geng Yan returned home and distributed some supplies to each teammate.
The one person who Feng Yu's heart has been pining and longing for was Wei Yanhua, so as soon as he heard that Wei Yanhua was back, Feng Yu happily skipped work to find the other.
In fact, he also had nothing much to do recently, and it was just mainly urging the researchers to produce more ability stimulants.
He had no need to do this sort of repetitive production work, instead, what he needed to do was to wait for the base’s higher-ups to get back so he could discuss the price aspect with them.
"Yanhua, I've come to send over the ability stimulating serum that you wanted me to get." Feng Yu raised the security box[1] in his hand.
Wei Yanhua didn't reach out to received it but instead forced out an awkward laugh. "Actually, my friend has already awakened his ability. Before, he had been keeping it from us in order to chase a man. I’ve troubled you to make this trip, but I really don't need it [anymore]. Thank you, I'll treat you to a meal another day."
"I have some information that you may be interested in. Do you want to call over your friend, Ji Anran? It has something to do with him."
"Sure."
Wei Yanhua assented without even having to give it a thought.
He understood Feng Yu fairly well and knew that the other party wouldn’t do things without a reason. For him to have said it like this, then it must be something major related to Anran.
[1] So… I guess this should be the safe that Chen Xiaohui got into last time, and I guess there really was just one serum in there for Feng Yu to bring away.
